State Origins of American Artists

Just the other day, I was reading about Andy Warhol. It always strikes me that he’s from Pittsburgh. I mean, it’s a great city (I spent my teen years there), but it’s very blue collar, and not exactly known as an artistic mecca.

And isn’t Jackson Pollock from Montana or Wyoming or someplace out there? And isn’t Jasper Johns from South Carolina? I do know Robert Indiana is from – surprise! – Indiana.

Though they all seem to end up in New York City, I do wonder where they all got their start.

Methodology

  1. Identify the top 50 American artists using Google
  2. Figure out what state they were born in
  3. Add ‘em all up

NOTE: This includes artists and sculptors, but not photographers.

Results

There are more than a few from New York, as well as from another northeast state, Massachusetts. But would you believe that the #1 state is Pennsylvania?

But look at all those one-offs – Rhode Island, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming … Here’s how they all shake out pie-chart-wise.

Interestingly, the one-offs make up almost half. Note, though, that the top 3 do make up more than half. Not sure what that all means. Maybe talent can start anywhere. As for those northeastern states, they may simply have more history (and people).

Details

So, here they are, state by state:

Tennis Slams by Country

Well, Coco Gauff just went out in the first round at Wimbledon. And that after winning it all at the French Open.

And that got me thinking …  How long since an American last won a slam before her? What country is best on clay? How about grass? How do the host countries fare? What country’s won the most slams overall?

Methodology

  • Look at both men and womens champions
  • For the grand slams (Wimbledon, US, French, Australian)
  • Since the beginning of the Open Era (1968)
  • Then divide up number of titles per country

Wimbledon

Notes

  • Williams = both Venus (5) & Serena (7)
  • Switzerland = Federer (8), Serbia = Djokovic (7), Sweden = Bjorg (5)
  • Top country is the US, with 44
  • The host country, the UK, managed only 4 titles
  • Most interesting 1-off is Kazakhstan (Elena Rybakina, 2022)

US Open

Notes

  • Williams = both Serena (6) & Venus (2)
  • Australia (10) = 5 different players
  • Switzerland = mostly Federer (5)
  • The host country, the US, has a plurality of titles (45) though not a majority
  • Most interesting 1-off is Canada (Bianca Andreescu, 2019)

French Open

Notes

  • Sweden = mostly Bjorg (6), Germany = Graf (6)
  • The host country, France, has only 2 titles
  • Most interesting 1-off is Ecuador (Andres Gomez, 1990) & Latvia (Jelena Ostapenko, 2017)

Australian Open

Notes

  • Serbia = mostly Djokovic (10), Switzerland = mostly Federer (6)
  • The host country, Australia, has 11 titles, split over 6 players
  • Most interesting 1-offs are South Africa (Johan Kriek, 1981) & China (Li Na, 2014)
