Tough Act to Follow

Poor Didi Gregorius. Not only is he taking over for a future, first-round Hall of Famer (Derek Jeter). He’s also taking over for someone who set a record for holding the same position for the same club for the most years (20). Finally, he’s doing that for the most storied baseball team on the planet (the New York Yankees).

"Didi," meet Captain Clutch

He’s not, however, the first player to ever have done something like that. I mean, off the top of my head, I can think of Mantle taking over for DiMaggio and – because I’m a Pirate fan – Richie Zisk taking over for Clemente and Dave Cash taking over for Maz. And, when you think about it, someone had to take over for Gehrig, and Schmidt, and Banks – though who that might actually be isn’t right on the tip of my tongue.

Who else is out there?

Methodology

So, here’s what I did:
  1. I started out with a list of all the Hall of Famers
  2. I narrowed down the list to players who retired with a team they had played with for at least 10 years.
  3. I further narrowed down the list to players who played at the same position for at least their final 10 years
  4. Finally, I made sure everyone was a starter in all those years

Of course, that does eliminate quite a few guys. At the same time, though, who thinks of Ty Cobb as an A, or Babe Ruth as a Brave, or Robin Yount as a center fielder, or Cal Ripken as a third baseman? Did you realize that Eddie Murray played with 4 other teams after the Orioles? That the one and only year Al Kaline didn’t start in right field for his 22 years with the Tigers was his last one, where he got 558 at bats, all as a DH?

Cobb as A

Unfortunately, this also eliminates almost all pitchers. When a Sandy Koufax or a Walter Johnson retires, it’s not always obvious who’s the team’s new number one (though maybe I could do a separate post just for these guys). And closers? Jeez, I don’t think any of them ever stayed with the same club for 10 years.

Results

All of those hefty requirements resulted in a list of 20 players:

Old Guy Team Position New Guy
Cap Anson White Sox 1B Bill Everitt
Ernie Bank Cubs 1B Jim Hickman
Yogi Berra Yankees C Elston Howard
Lou Brock Cards LF Bobby Bonds
Roy Campanella Dodgers C John Roseboro
Roberto Clemente Pirates RF Rihie Zisk
Bill Dickey Yankees C Aaron Robinson
Joe DiMaggio Yankees CF Mickey Mantle
Carlton Fisk White Sox C Karkovice
Frankie Frisch Cards 2B Stu Martin
Lou Gehrig Yankees 1B Babe Dahlgren
Tony Gywnn Tigers RF Bubba Trammel
Barry Larkin Reds SS Felipe Lopez
Bill Mazeroski Pirates 2B Dave Cash
Bid McPhee Reds 2B Joe Quinn
Ryne Sandberg Cubs 2B Mickey Morandini
Ozzie Smith Cards SS Royce Clayton
Bill Terry Giants 1B Gil Mancuso
Pie Traynor Pirates 3B Lee Handley
Ted Williams Red Sox LF Carl Yastrzemski

"And no anchovies …”

Well, that’s all well and good.  What I want to know, though, is who made out? Who was a disaster? What team didn’t miss a beat? What team created a hole on the field that didn’t get filled for another 20 years?

A good way to look at that is WAR, wins above replacement – pretty much the standard way these days to evaluate players’ all-around performance. I used WAR in two ways:

  • Comparing the 2 players WARs from year-to-year - i.e., the old guy's last year and the new kid's first
  • Comparing their yearly WAR averages over their whole careers

The first one gives you a good straight-up number. The second one, though, compensates for any single-year effects – the old guy’s having a particularly poor last year, the rookie’s a little wet behind the ears, etc.

Winners

It may be hard to believe, but some teams actually saw an improvement when they went with the new guy. As a matter of fact, this situation actually describes two-thirds of the sample. That’s not too surprising, though, when you simply consider the age difference between the two. The best (or should I say “worst”?) examples of these include Berra to Howard (4.2 difference in WAR) and Mazeroski to Cash (4.1).

Now, of course that’s the year-to-year view. It’s a very different story when you look at career WAR. In that case, there are only two Hall of Famers who had lower total WARs that their replacements. And they are Brock to Bonds (1.74) and DiMaggio to Mantle (0.09)

That last number brings up another possibility to measure success, the least amount of change from year to year. Year-to-year, we’ve got three under 1.00 – Gehrig to Dahlgren (-0.1), Terry to Mancuso (-0.5), and Gwynn to Trammel (-0.8). Career-wise, we’ve got the DiMaggio-Mantle 0.09 mentioned above, but the even more equitable Mazeroski to Cash difference of 0.01 as well.

Yankee Clipper, meet Commerce Comet

Of course, this won’t mean all that much if you’re going from one mediocre performance to another. What I’m really interested is are any transitions that went from one all-time great to another all-time great. And a good way to get a bead on that is to simply total the two players’ WARs. Year-to-year that gives us Dimaggio-Mantle (9.4), Clemente-Zisk (7.1), and Berra-Howard (6.8). Career? Don’t be too surprised that DiMaggio-Mantle again lead the pack (12.2). Runners up include Clemente-Zisk, at 7.1 (and, yes, that’s mostly Roberto), and Schmidt-Hayes (and, indeed, that is almost all Schmitty).

Losers

Okay, now comes the fun part …

Biggest falling off year-to-year?  Would you believe Teddy Ballgame to Yaz?  Yup, Williams' last year clocked in (out?) at a very respectable 3.0. The 21-year-old Yazstrewski, however, was a little overmatched, with a WAR of -0.3.  Total difference?  -3.3.

Splendid Splinter, meet Carl Michael Yastrzemski

Career? Wow! This one is huge. In fact, we’re going from Gehrig’s absolutely incredible 6.6 to poor Babe Dahlgren’s pretty darn unimpressive 0.35.

Iron Horse, meet The Babe
(actually, just a Babe –
actually, that’s really just short for “Ellsworth”)

Totaling both WARs together? Interestingly, the lowest totals include genuine all-time stars Cap Anson and Carlton Fisk. Of course, their partners in crime were also Bill Everitt and Ron Karkovice.

Kings of America

George Washington famously turned down the opportunity to be our country’s first king. What might have happened, though, if he had accepted?

George I (House of Washington)
1789-1799

George Washington died only two years after completing his term as president. Thus, his presidency and his reign would have neatly overlapped.

Unfortunately, Washington also left no heirs. So, this whole experiment in monarchy may simply have disappeared at this point.

It may also, however, simply continued. In cases like these, there is a precedent for electing a new ruler.

NOTE: Washington did have an adopted son. George Washington Parke Custis was the grandson of Martha Washington and was raised by the Washingtons at Mt. Vernon. If he had been given the kingship, he would have ruled as George II, and started the Custis dynasty. His only surviving child would be Mary Anna Custis, who would marry Robert E. Lee. Thus, if this scenario had played out, the descendants of the South’s most famous son would have ruled the entire country. Which would probably have made for some interesting history, to say the least. But let’s continue on …

John I (House of Adams)
1799-1826

Who would Congress have elected though? My guess is it would probably have been John Adams.

Having been Washington’s real vice president, chances are pretty good Adams would have been equally active in Washington’s hypothetical reign as well. That Adams was also elected as Washington’s successor as president further boosts his chances of being elected as his country’s next king.

Interestingly, Adams’ reign would have gone far past his mere four-year term as president. In fact, the idea of a staunch Federalist on the throne for the presidencies (or premierships, or whatever) of Democratic-Republicans like Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe make me wonder if this whole royal thing would have stood up. Perhaps, though, it may simply have gone the way of the British monarchy – i.e., toward a more constitutionally proscribed, functionally limited role.

John II
1826-1848

Conveniently, John Adams’ oldest son, John Quincy Adams, also became a president in his own right. Thus, three strong rulers in a row may well have cemented monarchy in the United States for good.

Interestingly, John Quincy’s presidency and reign would have both started in the same year. John II’s reign would, though, have outlasted his presidency by a good 18 years. And that means that he probably would have had some conflicts with Jacksonian democrats, as well as pro-slavery Southerners. If, however, he really played more of a figurehead role, I don’t see this causing any problems.

Charles I
1848-1886

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Though Charles Francis Adams (Charles I) was quite accomplished (as a politician and diplomat), and would have made another excellent king, he was not John Quincy’s firstborn son.

George Washington Adams was. He did not, however, outlast his father, committing suicide in 1829, at age 28. Though GW Adams had been a state representative, he was also an alcoholic and a big-time womanizer. Thus, he would have represented our first royal scandal. He died unmarried.

John Quincy’s second son, John, also failed to outlast his father. John was also something of a disaster as well. His exploits include getting thrown out of Harvard, being accused of cowardice for turning down a duel, business failures, and his own bouts with alcoholism.

NOTE:  He did marry, though, and actually produced two daughters. Depending on any laws of succession we may have voted in, John’s eldest daughter, Mary Louisa, may have then ascended to the throne as Mary I. She would have reigned until 1859, with her son John (I guess he would have been John III) taking over from her. As she married some guy named William Clark Johnson, John III would thus have started a new dynasty, the Johnsons. John failed to have any children however, so the line would have reverted back to the Adams, to Charles II (see below) in particular.

Let’s stick, though, with a male-only, or Salic, accession. It’ll also make this post a lot easier to write, if nothing else.

Charles I would have weathered the Civil War. Here’s hoping he would have provided the country with something to rally around other than the flag.

John III
1886-1894

John (known as John Quincy Adams II) was Charles I’s oldest son. He followed in his forefathers’ footsteps by serving in the state legislature, and also running – unsuccessfully however – for lieutenant governor, governor, and vice-president. He married into the very prominent Crowninshield family of New York. John III died at age 60.

George II
1894-1900

George II (George Caspar Adams) was John III’s oldest son. He represents the first real departure from our long line of political service in the Adams family. George was, in fact, known primarily as a player and coach of the Harvard football team. He also was a yachtsman and a real estate investor. He died of tuberculosis at the young age of 37, never having married.

Charles II
1900-1954

Charles II (known as Charles Francis Adams III) was John III’s second-oldest son. He represents a return to political service – as well as a return to a much lengthier reign. He also continues the naval theme from George II, being in fact a fine yachtsman, but also Secretary of the Navy as well. I see him making his royal appearances in a rear admiral’s uniform.

Charles III
1954-1999

Charles III (known as Charles Francis Adams IV) was Charles II’s oldest son. He was a naval officer in WWII and then later head of Raytheon. I see him in a naval uniform as well.

Charles IV
1999-

Sorry, don’t know a darn thing about this guy.

You named your child what? (Girls)

One of the little known benefits of our own Social Security Administration is a kick-ass database of what names Americans give their kids. It’s got the top 1000 names for every year from 1879 to 2014. Cool, huh?

One thing it doesn’t have, though, is associations with those particular names. Now, there are a couple of ways you can go about getting those, but one that I particularly like is Google’s auto complete. You know, when you type in “cliff,” and it suggests things like “cliff Alexander,” “cliff notes,” “cliffs of dover,” and so on.

So, here you go – the top 10 girl names from 2014, the top auto-complete for that name (along with that person’s bio), the next 5 auto-completes, and some more (pretty random) stuff. Enjoy!

First Lady Notties

So, we've got our First Lady hotties right here (and some presidential ones here). Now, let's take a look at some from the other extreme.

#10

Hey, it’s Aunt Jenny, from Spry Shortening (thanks, James Lileks) … albeit a much more serious version.

Okay, so it’s not Aunt Jenny. Here are some clues as to who it really is though:
  • A real cougar, she was five years older than her hubby
  • He referred to her as “The Duchess”
  • He cheated on her right and left
  • There are rumors that she did him in

Wow! These two were …

Warren G Harding and Florence Kling DeWolfe Harding

Zontra – the thing with two brains!

Actually, no. This is merely the wife of the 25th president of the United States. The things on her head are just a hairdo – all the rage in, oh, 1900 or so.

So, if that wasn’t enough to give it away, here are some more clues (primarily of a medical nature):
  • She had a nervous breakdown after the death of the couple’s two daughters
  • She had epilepsy
  • She took barbiturates, laudanum, and other drugs
  • She was largely an invalid as First Lady
  • Everyone liked how solicitous the president was of her

Give up? They were …

William McKinley and Ida Saxton McKinley.

Hard to believe, but this elderly-looking frumpster also made the First Lady hotties list as well.

How can that be? Oh, subtract 40 years or so. Here are some more hints:
  • She was a cougar too – by about eight months
  • She could read and write (unlike most women of her date, place, and class)
  • She was 5 feet “tall,” more than a foot shorter than her spouse
  • His nickname for her was “Patsy”

Got it yet? Well, this will give it away.

She was married to this fellow:

And her name was Martha Washington.

Double feature!

This president was married to these two lovely ladies. The first was named Abigail; the second, Caroline. The first one was actually the First Lady, but died less than a month after leaving office. The second would marry the ex-president five years later.

As for the first one, she’s another cougar, being a year older than her hubby. You won’t believe where they met though. It was in school, but – get this! – she was actually his teacher

As for the second one, she was much wealthier than her hubby, and actually had him sign a prenup.

Clueless? I don’t blame you. So, he was …

Millard Fillmore. And they were Abigail Powers Fillmore and Caroline Carmichael McIntosh Fillmore.

Here’s another guy who knew how to pick ‘em.

The first one was named Ellen, and she died while First Lady. The second was named Edith, and the president married her after the shockingly short mourning period (for then) of a little more than a year.

Ellen was noted for being an accomplished artist. She died of Bright’s disease, at age 53.

Edith was basically the chief executive while her husband recovered from a stroke.

Him? Well, he wasn’t anything special himself – a lanky, bespectacled academic with absolutely horrible teeth. I’m talking about …

Woodrow Wilson. And his two wives were Ellen Axson Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt Wilson.

Hard to believe, but here’s another president who was “hot for teacher.”

In this case, it wasn’t a formal relationship though. Turns out he was basically illiterate, she was not, and she tutored him in the early days of their marriage.

Like a surprising number of First Ladies, Eliza here was an invalid through most of her husband’s presidency. She would eventually die of TB, five months after her husband passed away.

Give up? They’re …

Andrew Johnson and Eliza McCardle Johnson.

Needless to say, this lady did look a lot more attractive at one time – say, 40 some years before this portrait was made. As it turns out, she was also quite smart and accomplished as well. She had no trouble keeping up with her equally smart husband, and their voluminous correspondence is quite fascinating.

She also played a major role in her husband’s administration, being called “Mrs. President” behind her back. She had very enlightened views on women’s rights, slavery, and religion.
So, I guess looks aren’t everything, huh?

Have you guessed who we’re talking about here yet? He was …

John Adams. And she was Abigail Adams.

When I said looks aren’t everything, I wasn’t kidding.

This First Lady, for example, may be the most impactful one we’ve ever had (if Hilary doesn’t get elected president next year, that is).

For one thing, she was First Lady longer than anyone else. She also spent a good deal of her “time in office” constantly travelling the country to tout her husband’s agenda (as well as her own). And, after “stepping down,” she took on the job of US ambassador to the UN.

Who is it? It’s …

Eleanor Roosevelt!

Holy cow!

I was worried that this one was a mistake. This particular First Lady wasn’t especially attractive, but all her other shots are a whole lot better than this.

Well, I did notice a couple of things about those other shots:
  • They were typically posed
  • She almost never smiled

So, maybe there was a reason for those two things. Anyway, here are a few more clues:
  • She and her POTUS met in childhood
  • They had only one child, a very talented daughter named Margaret
  • She hated being a public figure, and did as little being seen in public as she could get away with
  • She was the longest living FLOTUS, passing away at age 97

Who are we talking about here?

Bess and Harry Truman

Short, fat, and with crossed eyes, this poor thing takes the cake / steals the show / wins the blue ribbon / grabs the brass ring …

Julia here was actually quite a popular FLOTUS. She thoroughly enjoyed being First Lady, entertaining lavishly and relishing being the belle of the ball.

She and her hubby were also quite devoted to each other. Interestingly, though, their marriage was initially opposed by both families. On her side, they thought this future president would never amount to anything. On his side, they did not want their boy to marry into a family of slaveholders.

Here is one last hint … She is buried in this guy’s tomb:

And she is Julia Dent Grant.

Alright, now how about some presidential mugs?
